An eligibility requirement for this year’s Alexa Prize is that students must remain enrolled full-time through the duration of the competition, which started September 29, 2016 and ends in November, 2017 (see official rules for more details). If your university considers pre-PhD researchers as a full-time enrolled students, then you should be fine.
