Thanks to all the developers that joined us for the developer office hours this week. Here is a quick recap of the questions that were asked in the chat window that we didn't get a chance to get to during the call. Looking forward to having you join us again next Tuesday!
Question: I need Alexa to ask for my user's zipcode and store it (dynamoDb) for continued user recognition, is there any documentation on how to do that? Answer: You can find an example of how to connect to a database in a skill in the ScoreKeeper example. You can find that sample code on Github.
Question: Can you divulge if "push" is in the works? no invocation required?
Answer: Push notifications are not supported in Alexa at this time.
Question: Can we respond in the future (like a timer)- eg. Let me know when my purchase/order is ready
Answer: You cannot send a customized response asynchronously. You will have to initiate the conversation by asking something like “Alexa, Ask is my PO ready?” or “Alexa, Ask do I have any orders ready?”
Question: Is there an API which can give me the device’s or the 'User account used to sign on to Alexa'’s geo coordinates, such that I can pass them to an intent.
Answer: Today, you cannot access Alexa’s geo coordinates and pass them to an intent.
Question: Are there good code examples of the Alexa Voice Service implemented on iOS (in Swift or Objective C)?
Answer: You can see some Alexa Voice Service examples here: https://github.com/amzn/alexa-avs-raspberry-pi/tree/master/samples
Question: If I were to build a tv show based skill, what built-in slot type would I use for search based on TV Shows name or actors name?
Answer: You would create a custom slot type. You can choose what to call it, for example “TV” or “Shows”. You would then want to create some sample values that can be used to determine what the user is looking for. Your utterances do not have to match exactly, but the more utterance samples you can provide the more likely a match will be found and mapped to your skill. For more information on creating custom slots, go here.
Question: Can I programmatically add intents, slots, and/or utterances?
Answer: Today this must be done through the developer portal.
