Is code verifier the cryptographically generated random string or the sha256 hash of the string?

I am trying to do companion app authentication, I am stuck at the last step of obtaining the access token and refresh token. What is actually the code verifier, that has to be sent to the server is it the SHA256 hash or the random string that is generated by the device?
